Established by the Nazis in 1933 in the center of the town of Oranienburg when the SA took over an old factory. It held the Nazis' political opponents mostly from Berlin (members of the Communist Party and social-democrats). The prison was taken over by the SS in July 1934 and subsequently replaced by nearby Sachsenhausen concentration camp. At closure, the prison had approximately 3,000 inmates (approximately 16 died in the camp). Oranienburg was the first known camp to have Lagergeld (work money) also known as “scrip” where prisoners were allowed to receive money from relatives. The Nazis created a camp canteen, forcing prisoners to exchange German Marks for scrip from the camp. There are some interesting stories surrounding the scrip that were issued in 5 Pfg. (green), 10 Pfg. (blue), 50 Pfg. (brown) and 1 Mark denominations.Collection
