The regulations occasionally changed, in most respects becoming more restrictive during later years after camp populations had dramatically increased. By the time this prisoners’ formular lettersheet was posted on December 8, 1942, the rules stated: Concentration Camp Dachau 3K The following instructions are to be observed in written communications with prisoners: 1.) Each prisoner may receive and send two letters or two cards each month from his relatives. Letters to the prisoner must be legibly written in ink and may contain only 15 lines on one page. Only one letter sheet of normal size is permitted. Envelopes must be unlined. Only five 12-pfennig stamps may be enclosed in one letter. Everything else is forbidden and subject to confiscation. Postcards have 10 lines. Photos may not be used as postcards. 2.) Money may be sent by postal money order, noting the exact surname and given name, birth date, and detainee’s block and space number. 3.) Newspapers are permitted, however they may only be ordered through the postal authorities of K.L. Dachau 3K. 4.) Packages may be sent in limited numbers. 5.) Applications for release from protective custody sent to the camp authorities are useless. 6.) Permission to speak with and visit prisoners in the concentration camp is not granted under any circumstances. All mail which does not meet these requirements will be destroyed.
