Effective January 1, 1939, Jews in Germany were required to adopt given names approved by the Nazi regime: “the given name Israel in the case of males, and the given name Sara in the case of females.” On the upper card, the sender is identified as Oskar Israel Koblitz; on the lower card, Ella Sara Adler. Both had to be handed to a postal clerk and checked. Both postal cards were mailed from Vienna in 1940, at 25-pfennig international air mail post card rates (15 pfennigs postage plus 10 pfennigs air mail surcharge to Sweden and to Italy), using different combinations of Hindenburg Medallion design definitive adhesive stamps and postal stationery. The October 9 card to Tjörnarp was routed through Hamburg for censorship; the October 15 card to Rome, through Munich for censorship.Collection
