Light green envelope with cursive handwriting in Spanish using blue ink. Five stamps are present at the top. Four are red 30-céntimo stamps depicting Spanish philosopher Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos. One green 15-céntimo stamp depicting Concepción Arenal Ponte, poet and leader of feminism. Overtop, three cancellations dated March 4, 1937 are present.

The April 4, 1937, letter to Scotland originated at an International Brigades hospital, denoted by the circular magenta “Hospitales Brigada International Dirección Benicasim” marking. Metered postage was applied officially at Valencia, after the contents had been examined by the military censor. Below: the March 3, 1937, International Brigades air mail letter to France originated at a mobile post office, denoted by the March “Correo de Campaña B1 E. De C. Movil” circular datestamp on the back of the envelope. The stamps were canceled March 4 with field post No. 4 circular datestamps, after the military censor had examined the contents. The Pessac, Gironde, arrival backstamp is dated March 12.Collection
