On March 11, 1938, after a series of provocations, the German army invaded Austria, and on March 13 the Anschluss (annexation) was proclaimed. A majority of Austrians welcomed these events, which prompted widespread anti-Jewish rioting. These 6-pfennig printed-to-private-order propaganda picture postal cards (one unused, showing the pictorial side, the other with a related commemorative cancellation of Vienna) celebrated the incorporation of Austria into Germany, with the slogan “One People, One Empire, One Leader.” On April 10, 1938, a referendum ratified the annexation, with 99.75 percent of Austrian voters in favor. (Parties opposed to the Nazis were not allowed to campaign, and many of their leaders had been incarcerated or murdered.)Collection
