Poison gas experiments began at Auschwitz on September 3, 1941. Mass extermination of Jews and others whom the Nazis considered undesirable or subhuman began in the spring of 1942 and reached its peak in the summer of 1944. The gas chambers were demolished in November 1944. On January 18, 1945, SS guards evacuated the camp, one week before the Soviet army arrived. Excerpts from camp regulations on the Auschwitz prisoners’ formular lettersheet canceled July 23, 1943, forbade inmates to receive parcels. On the lettersheet canceled December 31, 1944, less than a month before liberation, food parcels were permitted, allowing families to supplement the meager rations supplied by the camp.Collection
