Alfred Cohn, a German Jew, had escaped to France where he was then interned (nominally as a prisoner of war) at Colombes Stadium near Paris, along with POWs and deserters from the German army. This envelope was mailed to him from California on March 13, 1940, and arrived at Colombes on April 8, but the camp had been closed in October 1939, so it was returned to the sender. If Cohn remained in France, he probably was eventually transported to a death camp in Poland. An August 6, 1942, formular prisoner-of-war lettersheet went from captured Polish soldier in Stalag XVIIID at Marburg, Germany (Maribor, Slovenia) to his wife who had fled to the part of France subsequently occupied by Nazi Germany. Mail to and from POWs and internees was sent postage free.Collection
