Above: German soldier Friedrich Büdenbender was held prisoner by the United States Army at a stockade near Frankfurt, in the U.S. occupation zone of Germany. On February 26, 1946, he sent this letter to a family in the British occupation zone. The formular POW lettersheet was impregnated with copper sulfate to thwart secret writing. Below: German soldier Walter Schleising was captured by the United States Army in Italy. He sent this card to his wife in the Soviet occupation zone on October 30, 1946, from POW Camp 339 at Naples. He was later transferred to the POW enclosure in the former concentration camp at Dachau.Collection
