Scope and Content

1945 May 8, letter from Saint Peter Port cancelled the day Germany surrendered.

Context

Germany surrendered to the victorious Allies on May 8, 1945. During the entire duration of the war, the only part of the United Kingdom that fell to the Nazis was the [English] Channel Islands ("Norman Islands" to the German occupiers)- Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, Herm, and Sark. Germany issued occupation stamps for local use in Jersey and Guernsey. The day after the German surrender, Britain reclaimed the islands. The 2'/2-pence postage is correct for a single letter rate A strip of five ½ -pence Guernsey occupation stamps on a local Saint Peter Port letter canceled May 8, 1945, the day that Germany surrendered.
