1941 October 8, Front side - Envelope from New York to Warsaw held by British censors.: White envelope (brightness of scan blows out proper appearance of the archive) with typed text in English using black ink. At the top left corner is a printed address in English using black ink. A few magenta air mail stamps appear at the top left and bottom right. At the top right corner are two stamps. One dark blue 30-cent stamp is covered by the adhesive sticker at the right edge but deductively it appears to be a depiction of Theodore Roosevelt facing to the right. Directly to the left is a 15-cent stamp depicting James Buchanan facing to the right. Overtop are two circular stamps and one has the number "3264" at the center. A tan adhesive sticker with cursive handwriting in red ink appears at the center. The foundation is promptly working to update this scan.

Scope and Content

1941 October 8, envelope from New York to Warsaw held by British censors.

Context

A registered air mail letter mailed at New York on October 8, 1941, to Warsaw was held by British censors at Bermuda for the duration of the war. After V-E Day the censorship station closed, and all confiscated mail was transferred to Great Britain. This cover was released five years after it had been mailed, but by then delivery was impossible. It was eventually returned to the sender marked "La maison est démolie, retour à l'origine" (The house is demolished, return to the place of mailing). The Nazis had reduced nearly all of Warsaw to rubble. A June 2, 1948, post card from Poland to Czechoslovakia shows the ruins of the Warsaw ghetto. The postage is correct; 30 cents air mail postage plus 15 cents registry fee.
