Black-and-white post card photograph depicting rubble after destruction of Warsaw ghetto in 1948. The focal point of the image is a brick building. Wooden beams are shown sticking up through the wreckage at the center of the image. In the foreground is a wooden door or window with six window panes. The tallest point of the building is the brick chimney which remained standing. In the background are white clouds. It is sunny out as shadows are cast amongst the rubble.

A registered air mail letter mailed at New York on October 8, 1941, to Warsaw was held by British censors at Bermuda for the duration of the war. After V-E Day the censorship station closed, and all confiscated mail was transferred to Great Britain. This cover was released five years after it had been mailed, but by then delivery was impossible. It was eventually returned to the sender marked "La maison est démolie, retour à l'origine" (The house is demolished, return to the place of mailing). The Nazis had reduced nearly all of Warsaw to rubble. A June 2, 1948, post card from Poland to Czechoslovakia shows the ruins of the Warsaw ghetto. The postage is correct; 30 cents air mail postage plus 15 cents registry fee.Collection
