1944 March 11, Front side - Envelope from Flossenbürg concentration camp.: Tan envelope printed elegant German in red ink. Handwritten address in pencil is exhibited overall. At the bottom left overtop the printed German regulations is a black stamp with the word "Ungültig!" or "Invalid" in English. Directly to the right is another black stamp with the word "Zensiert" or "Censored" in English. At the top right is a red 12-pfennig stamp of President Paul von Hindenburg facing to the left. Underneath his depiction states "Deutsches Reich".

Scope and Content

1944 March 11, envelope from Flossenbürg concentration camp.

Context

Flossenbürg, located near the Czech border in Southern Bavaria, opened May 3, 1938. It was liberated by the United States Army on April 23, 1945. The hand-stamped admonition “UNGÜLTIG!” (invalid) over the instructions on the formular envelope mailed March 11, 1944, indicated that the regulations had changed, but did not specify how.
