White envelope with cursive handwriting in German using pencil. At the bottom is a green overprint stamp with the number "7518 140485". At the center is a smudge of black ink. Near the top right is a purple stamp which reads "Zensiert". The left edge has a red stamp with the Reichsadler.

A January 20, 1945, letter written in Serbo-Croatian from Buchenwald prisoner Stjepan Salaj’s wife on their farm in Yugoslavia. En route to Germany, the letter was opened for censorship at Vienna. Upon arrival, the camp censor removed the stamp to check for a hidden message, and splashed the contents with a chemical to check for invisible ink.Collection
