Tan post card with printed text and outline in German using black ink. Cursive and printed handwriting in German using pencil is present. At the top of the document is the word Postkarte in German or Post card in English. To the right is a purple 6-pfennig stamp of Adolf Hitler facing to the right. On top of the stamp is a cancellation stamp from Fürstenburg (Meckl) dated June 18th, 1942.

Ravensbrück, located 65 kilometers north of Berlin near Fürstenberg, was Germany’s only major concentration camp for women – successor to the Lichtenburg concentration camp in Saxony that opened in 1934 and became a women’s camp in 1938. Ravensbrück opened May 15, 1939, and was liberated by the Red Army on April 29, 1945. The June 18, 1942, formular post card has a preprinted message notifying the recipient that the sender is a prisoner at Ravensbrück. Handwriting in German on the bottom right of the reverse side reads "Bitte Deutsch schreiben" or "Please write in German" translated to English. The sender is warning the recipient to write in German otherwise the letter may be censored and not delivered to the prisoner.Collection
