Effective January 1, 1939, Jews in Germany were required to adopt given names approved by the Nazi regime: “the given name Israel in the case of males, and the given name Sara in the case of females.” With the fee paid by a 50-pfennig Hindenburg Medallion stamp, 33-year-old Jewish woman Margot Sara Joseph obtained her postal identity card at Cologne, Germany, on April 3, 1939, probably to identify herself when she mailed letters and cards to foreign countries. The law required her to add Sara to her young daughter’s name also.Collection
