Beige calf skin parchment/vellum scripture with printed text in Hebrew using black ink. Printed handwriting in German using blue ink present at the center. A purple overprint stamp with signature in pencil overtop is present at the bottom center. A black ink overprint stamp with blue crayon/pencil overtop at the center left. A cancellation depicting the Reichsadler appears at the center right. The date is illegible. "Feldpost" written in the top right corner signifies the German military postal service.

Besides waging war, German soldiers pillaged Jewish synagogues in the East. Obergefreiter [corporal] Paul Ehrenfreund used a cutout piece of a sacred hand-inscribed Hebrew Bible scroll to wrap a parcel he sent home to Vienna from southern Russia in 1942. Field Post Number 33.404 was the address of Bau (Construction) Battalion 219 attached to Army Group B. This segment of the scroll from the Book of the Prophet Shmuel A (Book of I Samuel) tells the story of David and Goliath. Field post parcel rated postage due, 9.30 reichsmarks collected on delivery.Collection
