Scope and Content

1940 January 2, envelope from Warsaw headquarters of HIAS/JEAS.

Context

The Warsaw headquarters of HIAS/JEAS sought every opportunity for Jews to escape, but few countries would accept them. A January 2, 1940, letter from the Warsaw HIAS/JEAS office to its counterpart in Buenos Aires, Argentina. A February 20, 1943, letter from a Polish Jewish internee in Palestine to Warsaw, censored by the Palestine Police and by Germany. The 50-groschen German occupation provisional overprinted stamp of Deutsche Post Osten (Poland General Government) was valid until September 30, 1940. The internee's letter was postage free by international convention.
