Partial excerpt taken from exhibit page Gary Sternberg in Shanghai: Mixing Flour, Water, and German Opera: Gary (Gerd) Sternberg was born in Germany on August 25, 1931 to a Protestant mother and a Jewish father. Although he and his sister were raised and baptized as Protestants, Nazi ideology designated Gary as Jewish. Gary’s father was arrested and sent to Sachsenhausen concentration camp on June 14, 1938. When released January 28, 1939, the family managed to find refuge in Shanghai, China with about 18,000 other mostly-Jewish refugees. Gary’s family lived in Shanghai from May 1939 to July 1948. In the letter provided by the Jewish Community of Berlin to Herman Sternberg of Shanghai, China, the sender includes information about Herman's relatives and friends in Germany. The first sentence states, "We hereby share with you, that Mr. Heinrich Stahl died in Theresienstadt in 1942." The letter continues to explain "Mr. Leopold Sternberg from Hildesheim, similarly Mr. Felix and Mrs. Rosa Lippmann are no longer with us (the Jewish Community of Berlin)." Leopold Sternberg and Mr. and Mrs. Lippmann likely left Berlin or decided not to continue as members of the Jewish Community of Berlin, the German text insinuates the three are "no longer with us" inferring they had passed away, but this is not the case.Collection
