1939, letter to English princesses from Renata Polgarova (Laxova).Context
In the spring of 1939, seven-year-old Czech girl Renata Polgarova was told by her parents that she would be traveling to England to live during the war. When she learned that England had a royal family with two princesses named Elizabeth and Margaret who were about her age, Renata wrote a letter to them in German. She left it on her parents’ nightstand, but it was never mailed. In 1971, Renata’s husband – also a Holocaust survivor and a veterinarian – delivered one of Queen Elizabeth’s corgi puppies at Windsor Castle. The front side is a Mother’s Day card featuring a picture of a tulip, addressed to Renata’s mother. Probably written in May 1939, it reads (written in Czech): Tulip Dear Mommy, For having worked so much all year here's a drawing from your daughter. From Renata on Mother's Day. Translation of letter (written in German): My Dear Princesses, My Mommy has told me about you, how sweet you are and therefore I would like to come to England. Apart from that these are bad times. Ask your Daddy if he permits you to play with me. Please answer me soon. I am enclosing a photograph, so that you know what I look like. Many greetings from Renate.Collection
