METAL FETAL STETHOSCOPE (top right) - 1880's Adolphe Pinard (1844–1934), a French obstetrician, was a pioneer of perinatal care. He invented the fetal stethoscope, a shorter stethoscope to avoid rocking on the mother's abdomen during fetal auscultation. This is an example of Pinard's aluminum fetal stethoscope (6 inches), with the very wide, deep bell. The Pinard stethoscope rapidly became the fetal stethoscope of choice.
