1902 - Bowles-Pilling Combination Stethoscope was the first type of combination bell and diaphragm stethoscope. It had a diaphragm chest piece, which was intended to be used interchangeably with another type of chest piece. The sole manufacturer of the Bowles stethoscopes in America during the first half of the 20th century was George P. Pilling Son Co. of Philadelphia.
