The Electreat, also marketed as the “ Electreat Mechanical Heart”, was an early TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) device that used two D-cell batteries.The unit was held in one hand and the roller was applied to the treated area. There was also a second, sponge electrode attachment (not shown) that was encouraged for reducing dandruff and relieving constipation. The manufacturer promoted the use of this device to relieve pain associated with back and stomach aches as well as rheumatism. One of the few electro-therapeutic quack devices not banned by the FDA in the 1930’s. Sold by the Electreat Manufacturing Company of Peoria, Illinois.
