Description

Geologically, the Fulton Chain region takes its place among the oldest land areas of the earth. Historically, it is a land of comparative youth. Its story, like its fresh green face, bears no mellow imprint of age such as marks the chronicles of the major portion of Eastern America. But despite its meager tradition and its brief existence as the scene of recorded human energies it is a fascinating sweep of lakes and woodland which merits a story more comprehensively and skillfully told than that which follows. As the plains and the sea weave curious enchantments that grip their people, so does a great forest cast a mythical spell over its dwellers. It is more than the spell of natural loveliness. It is a distinct atmosphere rising from an environment of leave shadowed mystery, incomparable and unsearchable. To consider a forest as an incomparable division, as a land apart, is in no sense distortion even in times of swift communication that makes far places neighborly. It differs palpably from those intensively exploited areas which supply the country's economic vigor - the vast regions of tillable lands, the industrial centers and productive mining localities, and the populous cities of commerce. Its place in geography is distinct, and distinct, too, were many of its inhabitants whose peculiar inclinations led them into a wilderness frontier to lay the foundations of its history.
