Civil War/ William Henry Walling
Plastic spiral bound booklet with gray speckled cover.
The letters were originally transcribed in 1972 by Philip Allen to share with family members, and included in booklet are a few pictures of Walling family, newspaper obituaries and other miscellaneous related materials. As far as is known, the original letters are in the possession of the grandson and namesake, William H. Walling of Stamford, Connecticut. The Allens are also related to the Walling family. William H. Walling grew up in Gouverneur (as did his wife), and enlisted in the 16th NYSV. He later joined the 142nd NYSV, then under the command of General N.M. Curtis, where he attained the rank of brevet Lieutenant Colonel. Walling captured the rebel flag at the Battle of Fort Fisher, NC for which he received the Congressional Medal of Honor.Acquisition
