The author Martin V.B. Ives, was a member of a committee of nine that was charged by the New York State Assembly to study the Adirondacks with a view to determining what lands should be added to the Forest Preserve. To that end it set out on a tour by rail, steamer, stagecoach, and on foot, starting at Saratoga on August 23, 1898, and by circuitous routes reaching Childwold in St. Lawrence County by September 8, 1898. The trip had taken them by steamer through Lake Champlain to Plattsburg, thence overland to Ausable Forks, St. Hubert's, Lake Placid, Saranac, Raquette and Blue Mountain Lakes, the Fulton Chain, and finally, via William Webb's "fairy tale railroad", north to Childwold. While the rest of the Committee disbanded at this point, Martin V.B. Ives continued on his own down the Raquette River to the lower end of the Hollywood Stillwater where he would catch the stage to Potsdam, his hometown. In doing so he was able to describe and photograph an experience no longer possible, most of that stretch of the Raquette having been flooded by hydroelectric projects of the 1950s. Ives submitted a 16-page report to the Legislature but wrote this lively and informative narrative for the general public.Acquisition
