Silver metal flask. Screw-on cap, attached by chain. Enclosed in canvas case, with metal liner base. Belt hook. 2 brass closures. Canvas has: 131; crossed guns, G., U.S., IL.

Canteen marked Co. G. 131st - 131st Infantry was 1st Illinois National Guard. Regiment was organized in 1874 in Chicago. First Colonel - Alexander McClure, Civil War veteran.
First Illinois saw service in 1877 Pullman Riots, in 1894 Brardwood W. Illinois Coal Strike, and in 1898 Cuban Campaign. Regiment's nickname was "The Dandy First."
