Description

1838 Mormon War in Missouri is an interpretation of the struggle between the Latter Day Saints and the Missouri settlers in Jackson, Ray, Clay, Caldwell, and Daviees, Clinton, and Livingston Counties during the Saints attempt to make Missouri their "Promised Land." after difficulties in Kirkland, OH. The author contends that while a number of prejudices and fears stimulated the opposition of Missourians to their Mormon neighbors, Mormon militancy contributed to the animosity against them. The willingness of both sides to adopt extralegal measures to protect and enforce community values led to the breakdown of civil control and to open warfare in western Missouri. The book includes the actions of important Saints leaders and Missouri government and Missouri State Militia officers and concludes with the Saints expulsion from the State on orders of Governor Boggs and their journey to Navoo, Illinois.. 286/Hardbound/Illustrations/Map/Photographs
