Description

1979 Pony Express Race sponsored by the British Post Office is a booklet made up to promote and explain their plan for a race from St. Joseph, MO to Sacramento, CA, July14 - August 22, 1979. The reason for the ride was to commemorate the invention of postage rates in 1635 by Charles I. The birth of the modern British Post Office took place in 1840 when it was now determined that the postage would be paid by the sender instead of by the receiver as it was previously. The British Post Office felt that this kept the Pony Express going as long as it did with the sender paying the postage. This booklet includes Objectives, Proposed Itinerary, Rules, a 1976 Race Itinerary, and a Historical Background. This book is from the Don Reynolds library. 17/Softbound.
