Price was Governor of Missouri 1853-1857. He was previously noted for his service in Mexican War. He served as military governor of New Mexico after Kearney and put down the Texas revolt of 1847.
Joining the Confederate forces, Price won one of the first Civil War battles at Wilson's Creek in South Missouri and in Sept. 1861, defeated Union forces at Lexington, MO. Among others he was instrumental in Arkansas and made one of the last raids on Missouri in Oct. 1864 in the Battle of the Little Blue and Battle of Westport.
Rather than surrender his forces at the end of the war, Price led the remainder of his army to Mexico in June of 1865, where he sought service with the Emperor Maximilian.
He died in St. Louis in 1867 at age 58.
