Einbender's 1st clothing store was once located on the SE corner of 8th & Locust.
It was built in 1940 by Lester Einbender's parents, Mr & Mrs A.J. Einbender.
The store doubled in size by 1948.
The above photo was taken looking SE from 8th & Locust.
The photo was taken on January 25, 1957.
Five fire companies, including 20 on duty firemen and half a dozen off duty firemen, battled the fire in 20 degree weather for 8 hours and 35 minutes.
It took them 4 hours to get it under control, trying to prevent the fire from spreading to a warehouse directly south of Einbenders.
The Heitman Mattress Company was located directly south of the warehouse at 715 South 8th. Mr Heitman thanked the Fire Department for preventing the fire from reaching his building.
Almost a dozen policemen were directing traffic.
Damage was estimated at $800,000 (a lot of money back in 1957).
The structure no longer exists.
