Andrew Politz moved to St. Joseph around 1905. His decision to open a confectionery shop in 1908 selling candies, chocolates, bonbons, ice creams and ices was a risky one. St. Joseph citizens had a sweet tooth, but there were already more than 50 confectionery shops scattered around local neighborhoods as well as several candy companies, including Chase, Douglas and Poe. But he must have known something about the business, for by 1910 Politz also owned two candy businesses, the Missouri Candy Kitchen and the Sugar Bowl. Politz Confectionery closed between 1924 and 1926. A city directory for 1926 lists a new confectionery at the same address, owned by a Peter Groombos.
