Context

Sunday Night - 22 Oct 44 Hello, folks..... I'm sitting down here by a fire by the Supply truck, just finished writing Duane a post card and typing out two reports for the 1st Sergeant. I've really enjoyed the camp fires we've had the last few nights here by Engineer Lake, where we've been bivouvaced the last few days for a "rest" period. Beginning tonight at midnite, our 2d "maneuver" begins, to last for the next several days -- then another rest period. Hope we come here to Engineer Lake again. I didn't get a chance to go for a swim this time. Maybe next time. I did wash some clothes, my hair and take a bath, though. We had "C" Rations tonight for supper. Also tomorrow for breakfast and dinner. Then "K" Rations for the next 3 meals. I've been getting a huge bag of mail every day, and I also handle registered and insured packages and letters. It really takes more time than you'd think. It takes time to get a jeep and driver sometimes, then time to drive there and back. Furloughs are being given all the time around here. The policy around here is --every 5 months, so I should be due for one again Nov. 7th. Imagine, though, that it'll come several weeks afterward; would like to get home for Thanksgiving. Thanks for getting Planalp's address. I wrote him a letter last night. Had a card from Rex Russell today. He's now in the Air Corps at Sheppard Field, Texas, and says it's darn nice. The fire is burning very low, and can hardly see, so will stop. All my love, Bob
