Construction on the post office and customs house began in 1883 and was completed in 1890. The reason why construction took such a long time was because the northwest corner at 8th & Edmond had sank into the ground during construction. Parts of the building had to be removed and rebuilt. The entire structure was later torn down and replaced by a newer building. One side of this building faces 8th Street and the other side faces Edmond Street
