Across the Plains in '62 is the diary of William Smedley. He was twenty-six when he began his journey from Omaha, Nebraska to Salem, Oregon with his team of oxen over the Oregon Trail. Usually he would cover 15 to 25 miles a day with his partner, and at times they would join other groups. After arriving in Salem. he taught school for one year. From there he went to Portland, Vancouver B.C., and San Francisco. Returning to New York by way of the Isthmus of Panama, he studied Dentistry at Pennsylvania School of Dental Surgery, and emigrated to Denver, Colorado in 1870. He practiced there for 46 years, seeing it grow from a town of 4,000 to 225,000 inhabitants.
