L1995.23.1Description
American Legion- An Official History 1919-1989 celebrates the first seventy years of the world's largest veterans' organization. Since its inception in 1919, the familiar emblem has signified service to veterans, community and nation. Rehabilitation, Americanism, child welfare, and national security are the basic ideals and purposes to which the American Legion has remained constant from its beginnings in war-torn France through the Depression, World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. In each chapter, two or more themes of major importance are developed within time frames partitioned by events that are important to veterans. The result is a study of how one organization, born during a period of chaos, worked to benefit all of society through innovation, determination, and a dedication to mutual helpfulness.Lexicon
