Scope and Content

American Troops Being Trained For War Under British Officers-Pershing Visits Foch And Receives Call From Stimson, 1931. The photograph at the top shows American troops in training under the supervision of British officers. At the time of which General Pershing writes in today's chapter of his story, "My Experiences in the World War." an agreement had been reached whereby a large part of the American army would receive its final war training with the British army in France. General Pershing was visited by Marshal (then General) Foch, but the famous French general appeared indifferent to the problems of the United States on equipping, training, transporting and supplying a huge war army. The two commanders are shown together at the lower left. Pershing also mentions a call from Col. Henry L. Stimson (lower right), then commanding an artillery regiment. He had been secretary of war and now is secretary of state.
