Description

Among the Shoshones is an autobiographical book that tells of the Elijah Nicholas Wilson's life with the Shoshones from the age of twelve. He fights, hunts for Buffalo, breaks in a colt or two, and he shares his horror at the Red Man's cruelty to enemies, especially the whites. He writes of the week-long dance (with 500 people at a time) which characterized a tribal meet of upwards of six thousand Indians. He also served as a Pony Express rider, and a driver for the Overland Stage. This book is unsurpassed as a wickiup's-eye view of Indian life, and a down-to-earth firsthand account of pioneer life in the Rocky Mountain area. 247/Hardbound/Illustrations/Photographs.
