Description

Among the Shoshones is updated edition, 1969, of The White Indian Boy, "Uncle Nick", who lived among the Shoshones for a time. It is an autobiographical book that tells of the Elijah Nicholas Wilson's life with the Shoshones from the age of twelve. He fights, hunts for Buffalo, breaks in a colt or two, and he shares his horror at the Red Man's cruelty to enemies, especially the whites. He writes of the week-long dance (with 500 people at a time) which characterized a tribal meet of upwards of six thousand Indians. He also served as a Pony Express rider, and a driver for the Overland Stage. This book is unsurpassed as a wickiup's-eye view of Indian life, and a down-to-earth firsthand account of pioneer life in the Rocky Mountain area.
