Description
Archaeological Remains in the Kansas City Area: the Mississippian Occupation, Missouri Archaeology Society Research Series, No. 9. February, 1972
Abstract: Mississippian occupation took place in the Kansas City area at a time tentatively determined by fifteen radiocarbon assays which range from A.D. 760 to 1290. Did the emergence of this complex come about as a result of a direct migration of peoples from Mississippi Valley settlements, or was it brought about by the brinsk trade of Mississippian articfacts with an indigenous population? The latter opinion is rejected here. Figures illustrate Mississippian-like artifacts from specific sites where no definite Woodland or Nebraska Culture artifacts are reported: There are sixteen such Mississipppian sites in the Kansas City area.
