Description

Archaeology of Eastern United States is a collection of contriubutions by distinguished archaeologists into a "comprehensive summary of the archaeology of the area east of the Rocky Mountains. The succession of prehistoric cultures which existed in the vast region east of the Rockies is described in full detail--the growth of Indian organizations from a simple hunting-fishing-gathering stage to the great confederacies of agricultural peoples living in populous towns. In most cases the chapters cover all significant culture differences within geographic areas; the most important elements of the successive cultures are illustrated by photographs and line drawings in the text." This volume was prepared in honor of Fay-Cooper Cole, Professor of Anthropology and chairman of the Department of Anthropology at the University of Chicago, in appreciation for the part he has played in the study of Eastern United States archaeology. 591/Hardbound/Illustrations/Photographs/Maps
