Archaeology of Missouri, II. Second volume in 2 volume series. This volume takes up the record of human history from the Woodland Period in 1000 BC and ends just prior to European contact.
This period saw the first great cultural climax of North American, the Hopewellian Interaction Sphere, which affected Missouri during the Middle Woodland period, 500 BC-AD 400. During this period extensive trade routes reached from the Rocky Mountains to the Appalachians, the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico.
Between the 10th & 13th centuries AD considerable cultural sophistication occured in Missouri. The Prairie Village Farmers of this Classical Mississippian period used mouds as the bases for their buildings and lived in village settlements surrounded by ceremonial centers, patterns that may have been borrowed from Meso & South America.
Detailed drawings by Eleanor F. Chapman, photographs or artifacts and excavations included.
Inscribed by author to Mike Fisher.
