Description

As the Mockingbird Sang, Civil War Diary of Pvt. Robert Caldwell Dunlap, C.S.A, is the civil war diary kept by (Robert) Caldwell Dunlap, a Confederate volunteer from Dekalb, Missouri during 1861-1864. The diary is edited and annotated by Suzanne Staker Lehr, Research Associate with the St. Joseph Museum. Dunlap's brother, Samuel, also has a Civil War Memoir, "Fishing on Deep River" published by Platte Purchase Publishers in 2006. Caldwell enrolled in the Home Guard at age 19 Dunlap grew up in DeKalb County, Missouri and joined the Confederate Army along with 2 brothers and then followed Sterling Price's army to the Battle of Wilson's Creek, the Battle of Lexington, MO, Battle of Pea Ridge and then on further south and east with the Missouri Brigade to surrender at the Siege of Vicksburg and a prisoner exchange that allowed him to fight on. He suffered several illnesses from which he recovered to rejoin his unit throughout the war, however, he lost his arm late in the war and spent the last months recuperating at the home of a southerner. He writes an epilogue in 1918 and mentions various St. Joseph area veterans. Photographs and a family tree accompany the diary. 167/hardbound/photographs/charts
