Context

Dearest Barley, Well, I am going to be on my own this afternoon; Ma & Pa are going up to Shenandoah with the Welshes It is a beautiful day so I shall prob'ly take myself a ride and then go see "Quo Vadis." Mother has decided it is too expensive for her to see this time, but I can go on my student ticket, I think, for 75¢, so that isn't too bad. And I do want to see it. I have heard all kinds of comments about it: good, bad, & indifferent. So, I'll have to go & form my own opinion. This Sunday being Palm Sunday, the church was of course decorated with alms, and the Jr. Choir carried palm fronds in the processional, too. We sang two anthems. 'Hosanna', and 'Fling Wide the Gates', as you can see by the program. Both sounded good, I tho't. John's sermon was excellent, a very graphic account of Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem. He compared it with the parade for Lindbergh after he had crossed the Atlantic. John saw that parade in New York when he was a boy (1927 - figure out how old he was!). There was the same joy, the same hope, the same 'sheer cheer'. But instead of confetti, there were palm branches instead of ticker tape, the people threw down their garments, instead of a convertible coupe, Jesus rode a donkey . Of course there were those who would not join in the celebration, Pharisees whose eyes were blinded by jealousy, whose lips were made dumb by fear, & whose ears were deafened by greed. They wanted to break up the parade, & finally one of them 'swaggered up' to Jesus, & said, 'Rabbi, rebuke your disciples.' They called him 'Rabbi', a term of respect, tho they hated him. (You should have seen John's lip curl.) But Jesus replied, 'If these should not speak, the very stones will cry out.' And he would not rebuke his followers, even tho' he knew that the same ones who cried 'Blessed' would later cry, 'Crucify him!' John went on to say that Jesus prophesied that even greater things than He did would be done in His Name. And so it is, for in this country, where only two fifths of the people are professed Christians, nine tenths of all prominent men are Church men, 9/10 of donations to charity are given by church members, and nearly all of the hospitals in the country are supported by churches. The schools, too, either are now or were at one time supported by churches. So what He said has indeed come to pass. I saw John before church and he was apologizing for the word 'unpure' in the prayer, said that I as a teacher would notice it & be surprised. So I told him about having to look up 'franticness' to be sure it was a word. The folks have left. They went about 10 minutes ago. As soon as I finish this I shall take it down & mail it & then trot off to the movie. Guess I will stop right now, for it is 2:15 & the show starts at 3:00 or so. Hope you are all akay. We'll be seeing you Thursday! Lots of love
