Bartlett School. In the St. Joseph News-Press March 28, 1993 there are pictures of a brick house located at 24th Street and Mitchell Avenue which was operated as a home for aged and dependent former slaves. There is also a group picture of Richard, Jewell and Geraldine Robinson. Richard was one of 8 black youths who tried to integrate the Missouri Theater in 1960. Another picture is a yearbook picture of the 1921 junior class. At the bottom of the page is a picture of a crowd witnessing the lynching of a 19-year old accused rapist Lloyd Warner on November 28, 1933. On page 2 E is a picture of retired newspaper editor Harold Slater, former local NAACP leader Kelsy Beshears, Central High School teacher Hamilton Henderson, Ku Klux Klan conference in 1923 and a picture of Smart Set which was one of the social clubs formed by St. Joseph blacks in the 1940's St. Joseph News-Press June 30, 2010 is an article written by Alonzo Weston about former students of Bartlett School. Alonzo Weston has an article published in the St. Joseph News-Press about Bartlett High School. Since 1980 former students have gathered every three years for a reunion. These are the people for whom segregated schools were a way of live. They were graduates of the city's only black high school before it cosed in 1954, the year of integration. As death takes with it a piece of the school's legacy; with it the memory of purple and blue school colors, of all-black teams and all-black teachers, of Purple Panthers and marching bands gone. In the beginning Donald Bundy did his best to keep the memory alive. Don Briscoe stepped up. They set a goal to raise a half million dollars to award scholarships of 10, 000 to 12,000.
