Beauvais House, 2nd & Michel, Historical Data File, 1953-1955 File folder containing records pertaining to the rescue of this home of Sylvanie Robidoux & Auguste Beauvais.
Official records of meetings of the St. Joseph Historic Homes Foundation, Inc. in January 1954. Ada Lyon was president. The minutes reflect fundraising and purchase of the Beauvais House and efforts to rehabilitate it. Many important community leaders were involved in the effort to include Milton Tootle, George Eckel, Carl Goetz, Harold Dugdale, etc.
Report by Ada Lyon on the perhaps five houses built by Joseph Robidoux in St. Joseph to include (1) Cabin by river (2) Larger structure with many rooms and a lengthy front porch facing south, at NE corner of Main & Jules streets (3) Row of houses on north side of Edmond St. between 4th & 5th connected with a long hall in back, individual units occupied by his children. (4) 3 other houses in northwest part of city including one in Krug Park Place, (5) Beauvais House at 2nd & Michel.
Although it was said that Robidoux built this house for Sylvanie upon her marriage, Lyon contends that the Beauvais did not move to St. Joseph until after the birth of their 2nd child, living first in St. Louis.
Beauvais met with hardship during the Civil War when Union soldiers sacked his St. Joseph general store. Moving back to St. Louis, he was burned out in the great fire. Later, he was accused and imprisoned for giving arms to Union soldiers.
