Description

Before Lewis and Clark. Documents Illustrating the History of the Missouri, 1785-1804, Edited and with an Introductory Narrative by A. P. Nasatir Introduction to the Bison Book Edition by James P. Ronda. Volume I. Nasatir prefaces Volume I with a detailed history of the exploration of the Missouri that DeVoto called "the standard authority" on the subject. Beginning with the discovery of the river in 1673, he charts the slow advance up it by the French and then by the Spanish, whose search for a route to the Western Sea was accelerated by trade with Indian tribes and competition with the British. Nasatir has collected, translated, and annotated letters and other documents dated from 1785 to 1795 to throw light on the history of a vast area "before Lewis and Clark." 375/Paperbound/Gray with map image/Maps
