"THIS HOTEL DISCRIMINATES AGAINST NEGROES"
Freedom Is Everybody's Business
"Where one is enslaved, all are in chains"
Statements of pride were in the press when a HOG was a guest in this hotel.
Yet, to Negroes, who are human beings, the services of this hotel are available only
under humiliatingly terms.
THIS HOTEL has a quota system for Negroes attending privately sponsored affairs.
THIS HOTEL occasionally but only by special pre-arrangement accommodates Negro
over-night guests.
THIS HOTEL serves Negroes in its Coffee Shop without question or insult only when they are
chaperoned by a white person or when the staff has been previously alerted.
An educator from Ghana, traveling under the auspices of our State Department,
who had been accepted as a guest in this hotel was insulted when he entered the Coffee Shop,
evidently the hostess had not been alerted.
For more than a decade at frequent intervals, we have tried to persuade and encourage the
management of this hotel to respect the dignity of the individual and give equal treatment
to Negroes. There has been no change in policy.
During this period, first class hotels in other major cities in Missouri have thrown aside their
fear of economic loss and are serving human beings, without regard to race or color, on terms
of equal citizenship.
Race relations in St. Joseph have taken a new direction.
Discrimination in all publicly owned facilities has disappeared. Even swimming pools have been
integrated without incident and school desegregation has progresses smoothly.
Within a block or two of this hotel many variety stores and an old established department store have opened their lunch counters withont restrictions as to race or color.
It is high-time for this hotel to drop its adamant policy of discrimination against Negroes, so that all of us who love St. Joseph can boast without talking through our hypocritical hats.
