Description
Beshears, Kelsy: Kelsy Will be Belle of Banquet News Article, Oct. 3, 1986. Digital Image of news column, Timely Observations, in St. Joseph News Press by Frederick W. Slater.
Mrs. Beshears, age 88, will attend the local NACCP Freedom Fund Banquet. Slater profiles Mrs. Beshear activist techniques. When movie theaters were closed to blacks, Ms. Beshears organized a demonstration where black college youth repeatedly requested admission tickets and were refused and later arrested. She picketed the Hotel Robidoux where black guests were refused accommodation. Beshears built the Brookside East Apartment Complex for low income occupants in 1970. She was president of the local and state NAACP and served on national committees. Ms. Beshears came to St. Joseph with her dentist husband in 1946.
