Big Old Bird Cage, Essay by Juliette A. Owen. about the acceptability of caging birds. Typewritten, undated.Context
The Big Old Bird Cage.
'The time for signing of birds is come.'
A bird in a cage is to me lie an aviator, locked up with his place in the hanger, and expected to walk up and down, talking eloquently and gayly about what he has seen in the heavens above, and what he might be seeing at the moment were the door to miraculously open.
Therefore I have never subscribed to nor sanctioned the time-honored belief that a bird in the hand was worth two in the bush, yet if the proverbial bird is a real bird, and sufficiently full of youth and inexperience, and correspodingly empty of wing and tall fathers, the one in hand is worth any number of similarly equipped birds in the grass,- wet grass in particular.
So the ancient and shabby bird cage that is consigned to oblivion in the darkest corner of the cellar during most of the months of the year, becomes for some weeks in the spring a treasured and respected possession, its rusty bars standing faithful guard between groups of helpless fledglings and a wet and inhospitable world.
For just when the nestling are beginning to resemble birds, and the old couple are congratulating themselves that they have achieved the miracle of a family, there is apt to arrive on the scene a ore or less protracted period of more or less chilly rain. The birdlings are to big to be hovered, and anyway with their size and appetites it requires the ceaseless labore of both parents to fill those gaping mouths. So the nest becomes soggy, and the young birds climb up on the edge and promptly roll off as soon as the scramble and reaching begins at sight of the dinner bill.Lexicon
