Black Clubs Established in '40s Still Thriving News Article, 1992. Digitial image of news article and accompanying news photo of Tes Tram and Smart Set. Article by Kathryn Gamble. 12 black women in the 1940's began meeting in their homes and eventually named their group the "Smart Set." When their husbands wanted to create a similar club the reversed the letters to name the men's club Tes Trams. First meeting in homes, then the American Legion, Tes Trams eventually bought the old Douglass School for their meeting place. The clubs were still functioning in 1992.
